Special event permits are required for many events and promotional signs related to events.
Temporary Signs
Some temporary signs are allowed by right. Others require a permit.
Temporary signs include:
- Stake signs
- Banner signs
- Signs during construction
- Signs on property for sale or rent
- The number, size and duration allowed for a temporary sign will depend on where the sign is located and the type of sign being used.
View the sign code to learn more about the quantities, size, height and time limits allowed by right. Temporary signs that fall within the requirements of the Unified Development Ordinance do not require a permit.
Temporary signs that exceed restrictions of the Unified Development Ordinance require a special event permit.
Permanent Signs
Permanent signs require a permit.
Permanent signs include:
- Attached signs
- Detached signs. The specific permanent signs allowed for any property will depend on the property’s zoning and the sign’s location. Signage for some situations, such as property zoned for a special use permit or for sports venues, has additional rules.

Sign Permit Fees
Signs permit fees are $60, plus $1.25 per square foot of sign area. This includes neon window signs.
