Get ready to roll: 69Express lanes open Feb. 21

The wait is almost over! After years of hard work, orange cones and anticipation, the 69Express project is crossing the finish line.

Starting Saturday, Feb. 21, the new express toll lanes on U.S. 69 officially open to traffic. This milestone marks the completion of a partnership between the City of Overland Park and the Kansas Department of Transportation to build a smarter, faster and safer way to move through the heart of OP.

Choose your lane

The 69Express project added a new express toll lane in each direction to decrease congestion and make our roads safer for everyone who lives, works, visits and travels through our city.

It is important to note that the two general-purpose lanes will remain free of charge. Whether you choose the express lane for a time-sensitive trip or stay in the general-purpose lanes, these improvements help everyone move more efficiently.

Seamless Travel: No toll booths

To keep traffic flowing, the 69Express lanes use electronic tolling. There are no toll booths. Sensors will automatically read your KTAG or license plate as you drive, so you never have to slow down or stop to pay.

Toll prices are not fixed. They fluctuate based on traffic levels. When traffic is heavier, the rate adjusts to manage demand and ensure the express lane stays free-flowing. You will always see the current price displayed on overhead signs before you enter.

Pro-Tips for your first trip

To make sure your first drive on 69Express is smooth, keep these two rules in mind:

  • Watch the Lines: Only enter or exit the express lanes at designated points marked with dashed white lines. For the safety of yourself and others, never cross the solid, double-white lines.
  • The Best Way to Pay: While anyone can use the lanes, KTAG holders pay the lowest rate shown on the signs. If you don’t have a KTAG yet, sign up for a free one today! Drivers who use the lanes without a KTAG will be billed at a higher rate.
