OPFD Hiring Requirements
What It Takes To Be Part of Our Team
To qualify to serve as a firefighter or fire medic, applicants must
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Have no felony convictions
- Have a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record
- Meet the city’s pre-employment requirements, which include
- Background checks
- Pre-employment physical
- Drug screening
- Psychological evaluation
- Not have any members of your immediate family employed full-time or part-time by the city
- Possess Firefighter I, Firefighter II and NREMT or Kansas EMT certification (EMT-P for Fire Medic candidates)
- Successfully pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test one year or less prior to employment.
Anti-Nepotism Policy
The City does not hire immediate family members of other City employees or members of City boards, committees, or commissions for full-time or part-time employment.
This includes spouses, children, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews or cousins.
Immediate family members of employees or members of City boards, committees, or commissions may be eligible for temporary employment. Immediate family members of the Governing Body are not eligible for employment with the City.
Academy
The Overland Park Fire Department runs a four-week academy for qualified recruits. New recruits refresh on basic firefighting and emergency medical services skills and learn the OPFD way.
The OPFD academy will challenge you and prepare you to be part of our family.
