Work is wrapping up on Santa Fe Drive, where changes are making travel smoother, safer and more accessible for everyone.
On Santa Fe Drive east of Antioch, crews are reconfiguring the existing four-lane roadway into a three-lane segment with:
- Two through lanes,
- A center turn lane,
- And new buffered bike lanes on both sides.
This “road diet” design aims to make the corridor more comfortable for cyclists and other micro-mobility users, reduce lane changes for drivers and provide a dedicated space for left-turning vehicles.
The project also includes new, accessible bus stop pads for RideKC routes 487 and 403, improving access for transit users.
As part of a pilot program, the City will add green bike lane paint at key intersections to enhance visibility and safety and highlight potential conflict zones between drivers and cyclists.
A traffic evaluation found that Santa Fe Drive’s current traffic volumes are well within a three-lane street’s capacity, so the new layout is expected to have minimal impact on travel times.
Santa Fe Drive also received an ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface treatment within the project area. The UBAS work includes asphalt patching and resurfacing of the existing surface, as well as the application of new pavement markings within the project limits, extending pavement life and keeping the ride smooth. Construction is expected to wrap up in the next couple of weeks.
