Summer fun is far from over in Overland Park!
August is packed with exciting events for all ages and interests. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the more splashes in the pool, explore local art or connect with your neighbors, there’s something for everyone this month. Here’s what’s happening in August across the City.
Park and Recreation Month Bucket List Challenge – July 1-31
Finish your July Bucket List Challenge, and turn in your completed sheet between July 28–August 11 at Matt Ross Community Center or Tomahawk Ridge Community Center to receive a prize. One entry and one prize per person.
Spend Wednesday and Saturday mornings browsing aisles of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and specialty products at the Overland Park Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market operates from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The 2025 market season operates at Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty Street, to allow for the construction of the Clock Tower Landing.
Expressive Endeavors: An Employee Art Show – Daily
With more than 1,000 staff members at the City of Overland Park, there are some incredible artistic talents! We’re excited to showcase the masterpieces of City staff at our first Employee Art Show, held at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Garden’s LongHouse Community Gallery. The art show is free to attend through Aug. 29. Admission is required to enter the gardens.

Stained Glass Workshop for Beginners – 1 p.m.
In this workshop at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, we will learn how to foil, solder and complete a stained glass project. Due to the nature of working with a soldering iron and chemicals, this workshop is intended for adults 18 and above. We will be wearing protective gloves, masks at times and protective eyewear as needed. It is suggested to bring an apron or a long-sleeved shirt you don’t mind using with chemicals.

Neighborhood Executive Committee Officers Board – 5:30 p.m.
The Neighborhood Executive Committee develops and monitors the progress of the neighborhood programs.
Committee of the Whole – 6 p.m.
The Committee of the Whole meets on an as-needed basis at City Hall in Conference Room 1.
Mayor and Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall in the council chamber.
Tuesday, August 5
Sensory-Friendly Early Admission at the Farmstead – 8-9 a.m.
Experience Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead in a calm and welcoming environment during Sensory-Friendly Early Admission Days. Designed for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families, this event offers a supportive space to explore the farmstead with reduced crowds and minimal background noise. At 9 a.m., the farmstead opens to the general public, but attendees are welcome to stay for the remainder of the day until closing at 5 p.m. Tickets must be purchased online in advance due to limited occupancy.
Discovery Day at the Arboretum – 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Craft time awaits on the first Tuesday of the month at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Little explorers are in for a treat as they immerse themselves in the enchanting world of nature and creativity. Each month, a new make-and-take project unfolds on Discovery Day. Crafting supplies are included, and the projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 100 participants. The first Tuesday of the month also happens to be Free Admission Day at the Arboretum, so entry into the gardens and this project are all free! The theme for August is “Dragonfly Clothespin.”
Goat Yoga: Goat Giggles and Yoga Wiggles (Kids Only! Ages 5-7)
Get ready for an animal adventure at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead! This playful class will combine yoga poses inspired by nature and animals with the irresistible charm of our Farmstead baby goats. Expect laughter, cuddles, a unique yoga experience with fun interactions with each other and our animal friends.
Goat Yoga: Stretch and Snuggle (Kids only! Ages 8-12)
This class combines gentle yoga with the playful presence of our adorable Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead goats. We will introduce easy yoga flow sequences that emphasize quieting a busy mind through mindfulness techniques. And the best part? You’ll get to spend time with our adorable goats! It’s the perfect way to relax, connect with nature, and have some fun.
Storytime in the Garden – 9:30 a.m.
Dig into stories and nature at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead! The Johnson County K-State Master Gardeners bring Storytime in the Garden to life. Just follow the purple umbrella to find them sharing garden-themed tales and fun crafts. All ages are welcome, with adult supervision required for the little ones. Regular admission applies.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes positive community policing partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Meet with your Overland Park Police Department officers and City staff. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy hot dogs, snacks and refreshments. This event is occurring simultaneously at two locations: Sapling Grove Park, 8210 Grant St., Windham Hill Park, 12950 Melrose St.

An Evening of Poetry in the Garden – 6 p.m.
Experience a magical summer evening of poetry in the Emily Dickinson Garden at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Acclaimed poets Dr. Marcia Hurlow and Dr. Andrés Rodríguez will share selections of their work in a setting that reflects the deep connection between art and nature so present in the works of Emily Dickinson. Following the readings, guests are invited to the LongHouse Visitor Center for dessert, provided by Kate Smith Soirée, and conversation. This free event is rain or shine. RSVP is required.

Giggle Time Children’s Program – 10 a.m.
Join us for a delightful children’s program on the first Wednesday of the month. Your little ones will giggle, wiggle and have a blast with diverse performances. From music and stories to puppet shows and juggling, each month features new and exciting entertainers. Best of all, it’s a FREE and fun-filled time that requires no registration – just come and join in the laughter and joy! Giggle Time in August features performances by Mr. Stinky Feet at Roe Park.

Legacy of Greenery Committee – 6:30 p.m.
The Legacy of Greenery Committee develops strategies to increase, preserve and enhance the city’s tree canopy by promoting, planting and maintaining trees and shrubs in the city. The Legacy of Greenery Committee meets at City Hall on the first Thursday of every month.
Concerts in the Park: Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band – 7 p.m.
Head to Thompson Park for a night of music! Opener Lester Estelle will kick the concert off at 7 p.m. with his contemporary jazz flair, followed by Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band. Alex Abramovitz and His Swing’n Kansas City Jazz Band bring the golden age of jazz to life with smooth sounds inspired by legends like Count Basie and Louis Armstrong. Arrive early for Downtown Overland Park’s Party in the Park with yard games and free family fun. Planning Commission – 1:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission considers all applications for final development plans and plats, holds public hearings and makes recommendations for final action to the Governing Body for rezoning, special use permits and preliminary development plans. It also prepares the Comprehensive Plan and reviews the Capital Improvements Program. Planning Commission meetings are held the second Monday of every month at City Hall in the Council Chamber.

Join us for a delightful blend of music, movement, and adventure as we explore the wonders of nature at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. These gatherings are designed for young nature lovers, ages 1-6. The fee is per participant. Caregivers and siblings need only pay admission to the Arboretum, and take care of both fees at checkout. Registration is required. Caregiver presence is required.
Environmental Advisory Council – 6 p.m.
The Environmental Advisory Council studies environmental issues while supporting and promoting new and existing programs, as well as developing educational initiatives that benefit individuals and businesses in our community regarding environmental concerns. This council meets at City Hall on the second Thursday at 6 p.m.
Environmental Advisory Council Officers Board – 8 p.m.
The regular meeting of the Officers Board is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Conference Room 2 of the Myron Scafe Building, located at 8500 Antioch, Overland Park, KS. The purpose of the Officers Board Meeting is to plan the agenda.

Join us for a quick paint session at sunset in our beautifully maintained gardens. There are limitless options to recreate the flowers and landscapes of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Or, choose to take the adventurous route and capture the prairie or woodland trails. Following the timed paint, join us in the LongHouse Visitor Center for a small reception and judging. Then have the unique opportunity to hang your work for the public to view until October 31. Artwork needs to be ready to hang in our LongHouse gallery.
Moo-vie Night at the Farmstead: “Up” – 5-10 p.m.
Bring your blanket and join us on the lawn at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead and enjoy the free showing of the movie Up on the big screen. Come early and enjoy the Farmstead and other fun activities before the moo-vie begins. The movie will begin at dusk (approx. 8:30 p.m.).
