They fill potholes, fix traffic signals, reconstruct streets, maintain storm sewers, sweep and plow roads and make sure we get where we need to go safely. Public Works professionals are the reason our community runs smoothly every day.
The American Public Works Association designated May 18-24, 2025, as National Public Works Week. This year’s theme, “People, Purpose, Presence,” reflects the heart of public service in Overland Park:
- People: Our dedicated team of engineers, technicians and maintenance staff is the backbone of our infrastructure. Their work keeps streets safe, storm systems flowing and traffic moving.
- Purpose: Every project, from resurfacing a road to rebuilding a bridge, is rooted in a commitment to enhance daily life for everyone in our city.
- Presence: Public Works is always there, whether it’s a winter storm or a sunny summer day, ensuring Overland Park remains safe and connected.
The City of Overland Park proudly recognizes the more than 100 employees in the Public Works Department who serve our residents year-round and support the essential infrastructure we rely on, including more than 2,000 lane miles of streets, 31,000 traffic signs, 120 bridges and 550 miles of storm sewers.
