The countdown to FIFA World Cup 26™ is officially underway, and Overland Park is ready to play its part.
On Monday, June 23, local leaders and community members gathered at the Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex to launch “Johnson County United,” a new initiative to build excitement and celebrate local events leading up to the world’s largest soccer tournament.
Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog, KC2026 CEO Pam Kramer and Johnson County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mike Kelly spoke about the significance of the tournament and how Overland Park and Johnson County will help create a world-class experience for visitors and residents alike.
A new World Cup countdown clock, located in front of the soccer complex field house, will mark the days, hours and seconds remaining until the tournament kicks off in 2026.
In true Overland Park fashion, the celebration also included a lighthearted “match” featuring international animal ambassadors from Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead — a fun and local nod to the global spirit of the World Cup.
Overland Park is proud to play a role in welcoming the world to Kansas City. As the tournament draws closer, “Johnson County United” will continue to highlight local events and initiatives that welcome the world to our doorstep.
Residents are encouraged to stop by, take photos with the countdown clock and share in the excitement. Let the countdown begin!
