Join the Celebration: Juneteenth events in OP this weekend

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday’s name blends “June” and “nineteenth,” recognizing the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and ensure freedom for all enslaved people in the state.

More than just a historic milestone, Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of the resilience, perseverance and lasting contributions of Black Americans. 

The City of Overland Park is proud to sponsor two community events that celebrate Black culture and support ongoing conversations around racial equity and social justice:

Juneteenth OP at Prairiefire

Saturday, June 14 | Prairiefire, 135th & Nall
Start the day with the Freedun Run 5K at 7:30 a.m., followed by a parade and a full day of live music, dance, poetry, comedy, speakers and family-friendly fun. Juneteenth OP brings people together to celebrate culture, creativity and community.

6th Annual Peace March and Rally

Saturday, June 14 | 10 a.m. | City Hall and Thompson Park
Join the Advocacy and Awareness Group of Johnson County for the 6th Annual Peace March and Rally. The walk begins at City Hall and ends at Thompson Park, where the celebration continues with inspiring speakers, live performances, kids’ activities and food trucks.
