On Monday, May 1, City Clerk Elizabeth Kelley swore in Dr. Farris Farassati as a new Council Member representing Ward 5 in Overland Park.
All qualified applicants were screened by a committee of the governing body of the city composed of the Mayor, the Council President and the Chair of the Finance, Administration and Economic Development Committee of the Council.
The Council Vacancy Screening committee interviewed several applicants and make a recommendation to the council Committee of the Whole for its consideration. The Council Committee of the Whole interviewed two candidates the afternoon of May 1, and recommended a replacement to the remaining members of the Council and the Mayor at the City Council meeting on May 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. The City Council and Mayor unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Farris Farassati as the new Council Member.
Farassati's Ward 5 seat opened in March when former Council Member John Skubal resigned. Skubal, who was elected to the Kansas Senate last November, and has a full-time job with Kaw Valley Engineering, submitted his resignation from the City Council prior to the April 3 meeting.
Farassati will serve until January, 2018. On November 7, Ward 5 voters will select a candidate to complete the remainder of Skubal’s four-year term, which expires in January, 2020.
