The Investigations Support Division provides support services and crime analyst information to police staff, Municipal Court and the public.
Staff maintains all accident and police reports and disseminates them according to state statute. They also maintain and track all property and evidence items so they are available for follow-up investigations, court trials or return to their rightful owner.
Two evidence technicians examine, collect and package physical evidence at Overland Park crime scenes. All fingerprints are forwarded to an AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) examiner, who searches a national database of criminal fingerprints for a possible match.
Crime analyst information includes crime and intelligence information collected and analyzed from a variety of internal and external sources. The unit's resulting analysis (identified crime trends, patterns and active criminals) is used to determine police response. This unit also maintains all departmental statistical information.
