Our total compensation package represents a significant investment by the city in its employees. There are two distinct forms of compensation: direct and indirect.
Direct Compensation
Cash payments made to employees in exchange for their contributions to the city.
- Base Salary
- Paid time off (sick leave/family sick leave, vacation, holidays, personal holidays)
- Step increases
- Bereavement
- Shift differential
- Workers' Compensation leave
- Performance increases
- Military leave
- Bonuses, promotions
- Civic leave
- Overtime (including compensatory time)
Indirect Compensation
Non-cash benefits that are not necessarily itemized on employees' paychecks or paycheck vouchers. They are intended to provide a broad foundation on which employees can provide for their needs and their families. These benefits either are fully or partially funded by the city and fall into three categories:
- Health and welfare benefits
- Health & dental insurance
- Long-term care insurance
- Life insurance
- Disability coverage
- Flexible spending accounts
- Wellness Program
- Employee Assistance Program
- Educational reimbursement
- Government mandated benefits
- Social Security
- Unemployment insurance tax
- Kansas Public Employees Retirement System
(KPERS, includes pension, life and disability coverage) - Workers' Compensation Insurance
- Police & fire pension plans
- Retirement benefits
- Municipal Employees Pension Plan (MEPP)
