Overland Park has approved its first-ever Comprehensive Parks System Master Plan. The city conducted public hearings in conjunction with a consultant in order to create the plan. The Parks Master Plan addresses current and future needs including trails, parks, community centers, recreational activities and other important functions.

The Comprehensive Parks System Master Plan effort details the Parks Department's efforts to acquire and/or develop parks and greenways, and enhance recreation opportunities.
Several meetings with residents and others were conducted including a community vision workshop and discussion about future aquatics amenities.
Input from residents was sought to gauge the level of satisfaction with park amenities. Survey instruments included an online survey, and a statistically valid mailed survey.
