Patrol

Officers from the Patrol Division respond to all requests for assistance and enforcement by the Police Department.

Patrol officers work day, evening or midnight shifts. Day and evening shifts mostly handle traffic complaints in residential areas; midnight shift handles DUI enforcement throughout the city.

The Police Department uses an innovative deployment plan to control recurring crime. Through ongoing coordination with the Tactical Operations and Investigations Support divisions, Patrol officers determine what areas of the city will be patrolled in each sector, each day, hour-by-hour.

The Patrol Division is supported by Traffic Safety, Community Policing, Motorist Assist and Animal Control.

Traffic Safety officers promote safety on the roadways by taking enforcement action on violations that typically cause injury or fatality accidents. They also respond to complaints, investigate crashes, install child safety seats, provide parade/police escorts and traffic control for organized special events, and enforce drinking and driving laws through checkpoints, saturation patrols and other means.

Motorist Assist is available during commuting hours, generally 7 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 6:30 p.m. Although they predominately patrol on or near the major highways, they also respond to calls for assistance throughout the city placed through dispatch.
