In order to maintain peace and quiet in our neighborhoods, the city has a noise ordinance.
For residential property, the noise level may not exceed:
- 60 decibels between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
- This is the noise level of a dishwasher, conversation or ringing telephone.
- Exceptions include the use of power tools and/or lawn mowers between these hours.
- 55 decibels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
A stereo that can be heard across a property line between midnight and 6 a.m. is in violation of the ordinance as is a vehicle that can be heard by neighbors between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. (this includes revving an engine).
Cars that shake the ground with its bass also are in violation if they can be heard (or in some cases felt) 50 feet from the origin of the sound.
Violations of the ordinance can result in fines: $50 for the first offense, $150 for the second and $250 for the third.
