The revenue from the 1/8 cent sales tax is used to fund a residential street improvement program, which consists of street construction, curb replacement, new sidewalks and street light upgrades.

The city maintains an aggressive maintenance program to extend the life of a street by sealing cracks, street sealing/microsurfacing about every seven years, and then a general milling and overlay. All this preventative maintenance helps maintain residential streets for nearly 50 years at a lower life cycle cost.

Overland Park has approximately 80 miles of residential streets that are at least 50 years old.

If approved, the revenue from the proposed 1/8 cent sales tax will be used in part to replace residential streets that have met their useful operational life.

Between 1999 and 2009, 28 miles of residential neighborhood streets will have been improved using 1/8 cent sales tax money. Another seven miles is proposed for improvements between 2010 and 2013.
