In May 2007, the City Council approved the construction of a flood control project along Indian Creek between Roe Avenue and Mission Road to benefit various properties adjacent to Indian Creek.
The purpose of this $3.1 million project is to eliminate existing 100-year flood risks to properties located in the Fox Hill Commercial Center located between Indian Creek Parkway and I-435.
The project consists of:
- Excavating material from the left and right overbanks of Indian Creek, beginning approximately 450 feet downstream of the Roe Avenue Bridge and continuing until approximately 300 feet downstream of the Mission Road Bridge;
- Excavating material under the I-435 bridge;
- Adjustments to the park trails along this corridor;
- Relocation of utilities; and
- Restoration of land disturbed by construction*.
* A significant environmental impact of the flood control project is the loss of established vegetation throughout the stream corridor; therefore, revegetation of the overbank areas is a major component of the project. A 50 foot buffer of trees and shrubs is planned immediately adjacent to the bank with native grasses and forbes outside the wooded corridor in the remainder of the floodplain. The plan includes a diverse mix of canopy and understory species designed to achieve a healthy forested area.
The flood control project is being coordinated with portions of private development in the area, specifically, the construction of the Indian Creek Parkway Bridge and earthwork associated with the Mission Farms West development located northeast of Indian Creek and I-435.
HNTB, the consulting engineering firm, has finished designing the project, and Clarkson Construction Company has started construction. Final restoration and completion of the project will occur in the spring of 2009.
The project is being funded through the Johnson County Stormwater Management Advisory Council program.
