119th Street is part of the 2008 Capital Improvements Program that includes the reconstruction and widening of 119th Street, from U.S. Highway 69 east to Riley.
This $6.9 million project includes adding an additional lane of traffic for each direction, a raised median, additional left and right turn lanes at required locations, new streetlights and improvements to traffic signals.
Adopted as part of the Capital Improvements Program in August 2004, this project will improve traffic safety and reduce traffic congestion along 119th Street, from U.S. 69 to Nall Avenue.
The initial widening, from Riley to Nall, occurred in 2002, and this project will complete the widening all the way to U.S. 69. Current traffic projections show an increase to more than 40,000 cars a day in the next 25 years.
The Kansas Department of Transportation completed a traffic noise study (2.20MB .pdf file) in December 2006, which concluded that there was no significant impact to noise levels (0-5 decibels) due to the widening project.
HNTB, the consulting engineering firm, has completed the design; utility work is ongoing.
Construction has started and will be finished in November 2008.
