The Detective Division is staffed by commissioned officers, a civilian analyst and volunteers who work in the Criminal Investigation and Analysis and Intelligence sections:
- The Criminal Investigation Section is made up of some of the finest investigative personnel in the metropolitan area who maintain a high crime clearance rate. This section is assigned to conduct follow-up investigations on all active crimes, including but not limited to: Residential/commercial burglaries; auto thefts/burglaries; thefts; financial crimes, including identity theft; domestic violence; rape; robbery; assaults/batteries and other crimes against persons. Community policing is part of these officers' daily investigative function.
- The Analysis and Intelligence Section collects
and analyzes criminal information and disseminates intelligence internally
within the OP Police Department and externally with other local, state and
federal law enforcement agencies to assist in the apprehension of violators. The section also has personnel assigned to a variety of Federal (FBI)
and local task forces that investigate crimes relating to terrorism, Internet crimes and computer forensics.
Units within the Analysis and Intelligence Section include:
- The Crime Analysis Unit, formed in
1993, is the first unit of its type in the metropolitan area and has gained
national recognition for its development and use of innovative computer-aided
crime analysis and crime mapping applications.
- The Cyber Crimes Unit,
formed in 2006, supports the department's investigation of crimes involving
the Internet, including eBay fraud, online prostitution, terrorism tracking and online predators who try to victimize children. The recovery of evidence of criminal activity stored on
computers is accomplished through personnel assigned to the Heart of America Regional Computer Forensics Lab. This service also is provided to a variety of law enforcement
agencies in the metropolitan area. The personnel in this unit are highly
trained in computer forensic examinations.
- The Crime Analysis Unit, formed in
1993, is the first unit of its type in the metropolitan area and has gained
national recognition for its development and use of innovative computer-aided
crime analysis and crime mapping applications.
- Volunteers are an intrical part of the Detective Division, giving administrative support to the detectives in the Criminal Investigations Section and assisting in producing several weekly crime bulletins and crime mapping applications in the Crime Analysis Unit.
