The staff of the golf division would like to thank you for your support of our operation. We know that you have options on where to play. We strive to be the best value from which to choose.
Our memberships in both the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents Association (HAGCSA) and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) are very important to us. Through the continuing education programs provided by these organizations, we are able to implement the latest techniques into our operations. This, in turn, provides you with the best possible conditions on a consistent basis. The maintenance staffs continue to avail themselves of the educational programs provided by the HAGCSA and the GCSAA.
The scientific and technological advances that are being made in the field of turfgrass management and our exposure to those advancements help us continue to provide the best recreational experience to our customers.
At St. Andrews Golf Course, we continue to evolve. Over the years, the first six holes of St. Andrews often have been described as boring with only a few positive comments about the challenge that the second hole presented. Holes 4, 5, and 6 were nicknamed by Patrons the "ugly step sisters" because they were somewhat unattractive and straight back and forth layout.
When progress called for us to make room for the new soccer complex, it was
an easy decision to dedicate that part of the golf course to the soccer plan and build new golf
holes on a much more attractive piece of land to the south and west of the existing course.
Six new golf holes have been built on a wooded section of the property that was virtually unknown to golfers and is located just to the west of the driving range and to the south of Tomahawk Creek.
We believe the challenge presented to our golfers by these new holes will be welcomed. They will test the player while still providing playability and picturesque views that have been hidden for too many years. We are excited about these holes. They will make playing at St. Andrews a whole new experience.
Even though golfers will thoroughly enjoy the new St.
Andrews, the most popular part of the project has been the construction of a new road from
the parking lot to Nieman. This change has allowed Patrons who must go north or west
much easier access to the primary roadways.
At Overland Park Golf Club, there are few new changes. First, power was installed on the interior of the golf course. This has allowed us to install our aeration system in eight different spots on the pond bottom behind the green on hole number two on the South course. This system will be operational throughout the entire year.
We also installed a lake aeration fountain. This will help eliminate some of the vegetation that grows every summer. The fountain will only be functional during the golf season. Along with the pond features a new drinking fountain was installed at the tee box on hole number three South, eliminating another “water hut.”
With the addition of the new holes at St. Andrews, we had the opportunity to save existing
raw materials. These raw materials became the new Driving Range at Overland Park. This
new range was built in a two week period in the fall of 2007. More than 20 irrigation heads, an
irrigation controller and seven acres of sod were recycled from St. Andrews to Overland
Park. There are five new target greens ranging from 69 to 270 yards. This new look gives
the player the sensation of actually playing a golf hole and should greatly improve the
practice experience. The final touches to the range will be the installation in of all weather
practice tees. The will be done in 2008.
One of the most important improvements we made at Overland Park is not visible to the players. We added an extra radio frequency to our system and installed a repeater. This upgrade to our system assures better communication especially with our Westlinks course and helps us assure the safety of our players during inclement weather.
Thanks for choosing to play at the Overland Park and the St. Andrews Golf Clubs.
While playing here, please remember to fix your ball marks and keep the carts at least 30 feet away from the tees and greens. And while on the paths around the tees and greens, please remember to keep all four wheels of your cart on the cart paths. These things help a great deal in keeping your golf courses in outstanding condition.
