The City of Overland Park is committed to providing a clean, attractive community. Active participation and the cooperation of every resident is essential to meeting this goal. This page is intended only as a quick reference guide and is not intended to replace the Unified Development Ordinance.
Can I keep my existing gravel driveway?
Existing gravel driveways may be kept in place providing they were in existence prior to June 1, 1991, and were included in the records from the gravel driveway survey. The city will not require these driveways or parking areas to be paved.
Can additional parking be constructed?
No new or expanded gravel driveways or parking areas are allowed. All driveway expansions must be paved with either asphalt or concrete. All driveways must stay at least two feet away from any side property line, and the total amount of driveway surface cannot exceed 35 percent of the area of the front yard.
How should I maintain an existing gravel driveway?
The surface of the parking area must consist of a uniform layer of gravel evenly distributed from edge to edge, and must be free of bare spots and vegetation. The depth of the gravel layer must be an average of 2 inches and a minimum of one inch.
What materials should be used?
Rock or crushed stone not more than 1 inch in diameter must be used for a gravel driveway. It must not contain dirt, sticks, construction debris or other foreign material. Sand, rock powder or other similar material is not prohibited, but it will not be included in the measurement of the minimum gravel depth.
Are there any exceptions?
Gravel may be used as a decorative ground cover or landscape element provided that it is clearly distinguished from the driveway.
How much time is allowed to correct a violation?
A violation must be corrected within 15 days. Failure to do so may result in a notice to appear in municipal court. The penalty is a fine of up to $500 or six months imprisonment or both.
