*The total sale tax may be higher in certain areas of the city where Transportation Development Districts (TDDs) are in effect. As of January 2008, there are two TDD sales tax locations: Oak Park Mall (95th and Quivira, additional .5% sales tax) and The Deer Creek Woods Shopping Center (135th and Metcalf, additional 1%).
The city continually monitors sales tax revenues and updates revenue projections quarterly to reflect current trends and receipts.
Sales tax revenues are anticipated to total $78.7 million in 2008. Collections of the city’s 1 cent sales tax, which includes compensating use tax, and the city’s share of the county's 1/2 cent general, 1/4 cent public safety and 1/4 cent economic development sales taxes support general operations of city government.
Revenues from the city’s 1/8 cent sales tax support the 1/8 cent sales tax for Street Improvement Fund and finance improvements to residential streets and thoroughfares.
Overland Park voters approved this tax in November of 1998; in April 2003 and January 2008 voters approved five-year extensions of the tax. The tax is scheduled to sunset in March 2014.
