Budget Highlights:
- The total 2006 Budget is $225,274,000, which is a 2.6% increase over
the adopted 2005 Budget. The operating portion of the proposed budget equals
$96,325,667. The operating budget pays for on-going city operations,
including personnel costs, commodities and services.
- The 2006 Budget provides increased resources for Public Safety. This
increase includes the addition of nine full-time positions in the Police
Department, nine firefighters in the Fire Department battalion chiefs and
two security officers in the Municipal Court.
- The Budget provides increased resources for Traffic and Infrastructure. The
2006 Budget continues the enhanced level of maintenance funding begun in
2005. The additional funding is dedicated to the streets, curb and
gutter maintenance program along with a contribution for the replacement
of hardware (traffic signals, street lights and underground cabling for
both) as it wears out due to age or material failures. The Budget also
includes the addition of a Traffic Engineering Technician.
- The Budget includes continued examination of ongoing operations to realign
resources, increase productivity and improve efficiency. For the
first time since the 2002 Budget, the addition of personnel outside the
area of public safety is included in the budget. Most of these positions
are funded from the strategic redeployment of existing resources and increases
in user fee revenue. The 2006 Budget includes six additional
employees outside the area of public safety.
- The mill levy is projected to remain at stable, at 9.037 mills.

- Overland Park currently has the lowest property tax rate of any city in Johnson County and of any first class city in Kansas. The City’s mill rate makes up less than 10 percent of a property owner’s total tax bill.
