How to use the maps:
Displaying the right layers of information: This mapping system displays various map features (such as parks or schools) as "layers" on the map. These layers have been grouped into several map types listed above. Click on the map type that best describes the kind of information you want to see to start the mapping process. Once you have started a map, you can click the "Change Map Layers" button to switch to a different map type at any time. The available layers in any particular map type are listed on the right-hand portion of the screen. Click the "Visible" check box next to a particular layer and then click the Refresh Map button to turn layers on and off. Note that some layers of highly detailed information (such as the air photos) will not display until you have zoomed in to a relatively small portion of the City.
Zoom In to a particular location: The map starts by showing the entire City, but if you want to focus on a particular area, select the Zoom In tool in the upper left-hand portion of the screen. This will allow you to enlarge a particular part of the City by using your cursor to click-and-drag a rectangle enclosing the area you are interested in. Or click the "Find a Location" button to select an address, intersection, park, school or other feature that you want to zoom to (Note: be patient while the map is redrawn).
Identify a particular map feature: Once the map shows the features you are interested in, you can click on a particular feature to find more detailed information such as the name of a park or school, the zoning designation for a particular piece of land, or the name and address range for a particular street segment. The type of information you get depends on which layer is active. Click on the appropriate radio button in the "Show Data" column of the layer list to activate a particular layer. Then, click the "Show Data For" tool in the upper left-hand corner (the active layer is listed below this tool). Use your cursor to point to and click on the map feature you want more information about. A small window will open that lists the available information about that feature.
