The
city maintains almost 1,700 lane miles of street pavement. Routine maintenance
of
the streets reduces the number of repairs required.
- Paving the Way brochure (.pdf file)
Scheduled maintenance programs include:
- Crack sealing: applying asphalt rubber into the crack to seal it and prevent water from getting into the street.
- Microsurfacing: a thin layer of aggregate, oil and asphalt binders are mixed together and spread over the existing pavement.
- Slurry seal: similar process to microsurfacing.
- Cape Seal: the pavement is first chip sealed (tack oil distributed with small aggregate compacted in) and then five to seven days later is covered with a layer of microsurfacing.
- Overlay: milling off the top 1.5 to 2 inches of the street and replacing it with fresh asphalt to seal and revitalize the street.
Scheduled maintenance programs are based on street condition using an automated pavement management program. Other repairs are made based on reports of problems from residents.
