OP celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting, poster contest
In celebration of Arbor Day, local students and members of the City Council and Legacy of Greenery Committee gathered on the grounds of City Hall to plant a Dogwood tree.
In addition to the planting, Mayor Carl Gerlach awarded certificates and prizes to the first-place finishers in Overland Park's Arbor Day Poster Competition. The theme was "Trees are Terrific - and Forests are Too!"
Prizes were donated by Johnson County Master Gardeners, the Legacy of Greenery Committee and the Kansas Forest Service.
There were eight winners in the poster contest, including:
- Madison Fleming, kindergartener at Brookridge Day School;
- Alex Ledbetter, first-grader at John Diemer Elementary;
- Sara Prideaux, second-grader at John Diemer;
- Grace Price, third-grader at John Diemer;
- Tammy Ma, fourth-grader at Heartland Elementary;
- MyKell Ma, fifth-grader at Heartland;
- Tyler Johnson, fifth-grader at Heartland.
- Brian Jacobson, a fifth-grader who is home schooled, won first place in the city in the fifth-grade age group which also is part of the National Arbor Foundation’s competition.
