A recreational fire permit is no longer required. However, the landowner will be responsible for any damages that might occur due to not adhering to the specified regulations below:
- No person shall burn, or cause, or permit the burning of vegetation, leaves, waste, or other combustible
materials except specifically permitted by the Overland Park Municipal Code. Burning operations shall meet
the minimum requirements of the local fire department and the open burning regulations of the State of
Kansas.
- A recreational fire shall not be more than 3 feet in diameter by 2 feet high in dimension. The minimum
required distance for a recreational fire shall be 25' from any structure.
- Burning shall not be conducted when wind speed exceeds 15 mph.
- Fuel for a recreational fire shall consist only of seasoned dry firewood, unless otherwise stipulated. The fire
shall not be used for waste disposal purposes, and the fuel shall be chosen to minimize the generation of
air contaminants.
- Any open burning shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. Fire extinguishing equipment as
required by the permit shall be available for immediate use.
- The code official shall prohibit open burning which will be offensive or objectionable due to smoke or odor
emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous. The code
official shall order the extinguishment, by the permit holder or the fire department, of any open burning which creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation.
