The city requires permit holders to contact inspection staff at various times during construction to inspect certain items prior to use of or covering up of items involved.
Many items are looked at on an individual building trade area basis, such as a plumbing ground rough or an electrical service. Other types of inspections, such as electrical wall and ceiling, are made when areas of buildings are about to be covered.
Many inspections are made to verify the proper use of materials and methods while others test for tightness of pressurized or liquid-filled elements or to ensure proper interaction of elements.
Required inspections for different permit types:
Permitted projects differ greatly; therefore,
it is impossible to establish a pre-determined list of inspections
for each. All permits require that each element must be inspected
prior to being covered. All permits also require a final inspection when all
elements are completed.

| EPW | Electrical Pump Wiring | Inspection of the pump and associated wiring, typically for a sewage ejection system for a private sewage disposal system. Note this inspection is performed by a building inspector and the rest of the disposal system (sewage laterals, placement of the tank, final inspection etc…) is inspected by the Health and Environmental Department with the City. |

| ESB | Electrical Spa Bonding | This inspection involves bonding of all metallic parts for a Spa/hot tub. |

| EWI | Electrical Wall | This is a rough-in inspection of wiring and other electrical components located within a wall. |
| FAT | Fire Alarm Test | The complete testing of an alarm system within a building, i.e. smoke detectors, pull stations. Typically this inspection is scheduled in conjunction with a final inspection or just prior to a final inspection. |
| FFF | Fire Protection, Fireline Flush | Inspection of the flushing of the underground fire suppression lines to insure proper debris removal prior to connecting to the inside building standpipes or sprinkler system. The installer will flush the system to the satisfaction of the inspector at the required rate of 10' per second according to NFPA Standards. |
| FGI | Fuel Gas-Inside | Inspection of all interior gas line piping and the venting of gas fired appliances. Part of the inspection includes a pressure test. After city approval is made the city will contact the proper utility company and authorize a meter. |
| FGO | Fuel Gas-Outside | The inspection of privately owned, exterior underground gas line piping. Part of the inspection includes a pressure test. |
| FHD | Fire Protection, Hood and Duct System Test | Inspection of the hood and duct system and testing of the proper operation of all associated mechanical equipment. The test is performed by the installer in accordance with the manufacturers requirements, the code requirements and in view of the inspector. The test may include electrical functioning, fuel shut off, dispersal of test gasses through the piping system etc… |
| FHI | Fire Protection, Hydrostatic Inside Sprinkler Lines | Inspection of the inside wet fire suppression system lines and the witnessing of a 200 psi. hydrostatic pressure test for a minimum of two hours. All sprinkler heads should be in place and cut sheets of special heads should be on site, i.e. quick response, extended coverage etc… The same designation is used to schedule inspections on a "dry" system but the testing is with 40 psi. air pressure for a 24 hr. period. |

| FOF | Fire Protection, Outside Fire Line | Inspection of the piping materials, thrust protection, and installation prior to being covered and the witnessing of the 2-hour minimum of 200 psi. hydrostatic pressure test for fire lines serving a building or private fire hydrants. The piping is allowed to be "shaded" or weighted down to prevent movement during the test but all pipe joints shall be left exposed for the duration of the test. Visual inspections of "minor" sections of the fire line may be approved for burial where it is critical for site work and approved by the field inspector. |
| FPL | Fireplace | Inspection of the masonry firebox, hearth support, and flue lining prior to the finished face being installed. Prefabricated fireplaces and their flue systems are inspected as part of the rough-in inspection for residential projects. See "RRI" inspection. |

The test is performed by the installer and witnessed by the Building Inspector and the Overland Park Fire Department personnel. Standpipes are to be installed during construction on buildings requiring them at the time the height of the building becomes 40' above the lowest level of fire department vehicular access. |
| FST | Firestop | Inspection of the firestopping materials installation prior to being covered. Often on commercial projects the methods to be used are specified by the architect. It is important to make certain that materials being used are part of a UL or other approved testing laboratory system and are being installed according to the "listing" of the product and system.Firestopping on most residential projects are performed as part of the "RRI" inspection. |
| FTG | Footing | Inspection of the forms, trenches and all reinforcing steel prior to concrete being poured. Footings for "deck" only structures are not inspected by the city but must be installed per the code and to a minimum depth of 36" below finished grade to be below frost level. Footings, piers and grade beams on commercial projects are not inspected by the city when it is required to have an approved third party inspection agency performing this function. Contact the plans examiner on the particular project to register that special inspections will be performed and by whom. |

If the assembly is to use drywall materials the inspection must be made before mudding and taping. The gas line must pass a pressure test prior to the utility service connection and meter being set by the gas company. After the City approval is made the City will contact the proper Utility Company with the information but the company will not complete the installation until the proper scheduling is made by the contractor. |

| PSW | Public Sidewalk | The final inspection of the installation of a sidewalk, made after the concrete has been poured and all forms removed. This inspection is only used on residential projects. |
| PTR | Plumbing Top Rough | Inspection of all plumbing lines located in the walls or ceiling prior to covering with drywall or ceiling finish materials. Drainage and vent lines are required to be air or water tested. |
| PUB | Engineering Services Site Grade | The inspection of swales, berms and other drainage components. Inspection is made by engineering service inspectors. |
| RRI | Residential Rough In | General inspection of structural, electrical wiring, plumbing lines (drainage and water), and mechanical work when the house is still in the rough-in stage prior to the installation of insulation and drywall. |
