Trash and Recycling

Trash & Recycling

Residential trash pick up is not a city-provided service. It is the responsibility of individual residents or homes associations to arrange for service with one of the city's permitted trash haulers.

Basic residential trash service in Overland Park includes:

  • Curbside recycling - All haulers collect at least these materials. None accept glass. Contact your hauler to find out what, if any, additional materials it collects.
  • Yard waste - Includes grass clippings, leaves and small tree trimming debris. Yard waste must be bundled or in paper lawn bags; plastic bags will not be picked up. Haulers must collect yard waste at least 40 weeks a year. Contact your hauler for its schedule, limits and requirements.

Trash containers must be screened from view from any street or neighboring property and be located behind the front building line of the house. In the case of a corner lot, trash containers can't be located in the side yard adjacent to a street. Trash containers also can be stored in a fully enclosed structure.

Trash, recycling and yard waste should all be placed at the curb on your day of collection, not in the street or on the sidewalk.

Overland Park operates a drop off recycling center, 11921 Hardy. It is closed on Sunday. Glass containers can be recycled at our drop off recycling center or at one of the Ripple Glass collection bins located in Overland Park and metropolitan Kansas City.

Overland Park sponsors a large item trash pick up for one half of the city each spring, and special recycling events throughout the year for electronics, paper and Christmas trees.
