Car Care
Taking proper care of your vehicle can extend its longevity and keep it running smoothly, but it's important to incorporate sustainable practices to keep the environment operating smoothly as well. These simple practices range from washing your car to changing the motor oil, or just regularly taking your vehicle in for service checks.
Oil changes are an important part of routine vehicle maintenance, but improperly disposing of used oil can cause significant pollution to area lakes, rivers and streams. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, used oil from one oil change can contaminate 1 million gallons of fresh water. It is estimated that 200 million gallons of used oil are improperly disposed of each year.
Recycling your used motor oil can help diminish negative environmental impacts by preventing the oil from polluting soil and water. Motor oil can be recycled by at many area automobile maintenance facilities or by contacting the Johnson County Environmental Department's Household Hazardous Materials Program at 913-715-6900.
Also, check your owners manual for the recommended oil change interval. In years past it was suggested that oil be changed as frequently as every 3,000 miles while most vehicles today will last for years with intervals ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Changing oil more frequently than the recommended interval will not extend the life of your vehicle, but can greatly increase your maintenance costs.
Changing the oil isn't the only maintenance that's important for maintaining both car and environment. Regularly screening your car for other routine maintenance problems can also help prevent increased emissions and keep your car operating at its peak. It's important to regularly check the air filter, vacuum hose, fluid levels and oil filters.
