Overland Park, KS - Before you purchase, possess or light any fireworks in Overland Park - DON'T.

Each year, Overland Park police officers respond to numerous complaints about illegal fireworks.

"Fireworks pose a serious danger to everyone. The city has a comprehensive ordinance prohibiting all forms of fireworks," said Jim Weaver, police public information officer. "We are putting two teams of officers on the streets to specifically enforce the ordinance, plus we have officers on regular patrol that will assist."

Children and adults also need to know that this year any person receiving a ticket is subject to a $200 fine. Fines range from $200 to $500.

In Overland Park, it is illegal to purchase, possess or discharge any fireworks, including sparklers, snakes, firecrackers and other devices.

Each year, fireworks are the cause of fires that destroy homes and businesses, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage.

In addition to the pain and suffering due to an injury, there are other significant consequences that are overlooked and just as important, including financial.

"It has been my experience that there is never a shortage of witnesses in the neighborhood to identify the shooters of illegal fireworks," Fire Chief Bryan Dehner said.

"If we prove it is firework related, the insurance companies will get their money from you. It is not worth the risk," Dehner said.

Rather than risk injury and property damage, attend this year's Fourth of July Star-Spangled Spectacular. This popular event, seen by thousands, is sponsored by the City of Overland Park, Corporate Woods and the Overland Park Rotary Club.

Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the free fireworks show set for about 9:30 p.m. at Founders' Park in Corporate Woods. (Rain date is Monday, July 5).

New this year is a grand finale. It is a 50-shot salute to Overland Park's 50th Anniversary. Fifty 5-inch shells will be launched five seconds after the traditional launch of 3-inch exploding shells.

There will be musical entertainment and more for the family.

Bring a blanket or chair, and leave your cares at home. Food and drink vendors can meet your family's needs.
