Overland Park, KS - Based on the recommendation of City Manager John Nachbar, the City Council Monday night directed staff members to begin the process of taking over the Farmers' Market in time for the 2011 season.

"The downtown Farmers' Market is a well-known community asset for Overland Park. Its appeal and attraction reach far beyond downtown Overland Park. In fact, it resonates throughout the entire community," said Nachbar.

"It is clear to me that the frequent changes in Downtown Overland Park Partnership staff and perhaps more importantly, market managers, has not provided the stability and consistency necessary to effectively manage the Farmers' Market over the long term," said Nachbar. "City staff members will work closely with DOPP staff members to ensure a smooth transition into the 2011 season."

This is the first step following a review of operations that began in early summer. More information from the review will be forthcoming, Nachbar said Monday night.

DOPP staff members will retain operational and administrative responsibilities of the market for the current season.

Commencing with the 2011 market, the city will take full responsibility for management of operations and administrative responsibilities. It will provide administrative stability and resources necessary for future market success, Nachbar added.

DOPP staff members will still provide promotional and advertising support in coordination with city employees.

Transition with DOPP officials will begin immediately as city officials prepare to review and issue vendor contracts later this year and early 2011 for next year's market.

The selection of 2011 market vendors will be based on clearly defined criteria. All persons interested in participating in next year's market, including vendors not invited to participate in this year's market, are urged to submit an application.
