Overland Park, KS - Summer is winding down, college kids are getting ready to return to campus and others want to celebrate.

But wait. There is a consequence for those who choose to drink and drive.

Therefore, it's a time to exercise sound judgment, and protect yourself and others from harm or death.

Overland Park is conducting a DUI checkpoint Friday, Aug 6, at an undisclosed location in the city. Officers from other cities, the Kansas Highway Patrol and deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office will assist with enforcement.

Hundreds of vehicles pass through a checkpoint throughout a night. Officers talk with drivers, and any drivers who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs are given a field sobriety test. Cars may also be searched.

At previous checkpoints, officers arrested numerous drivers, including teenagers who were in possession of an illegal drug.

Ticketed drivers include fathers out with their families, people on dates, minors and others.
Be smart and safe. Protect yourself by designating a driver and obeying traffic laws.

Do the math - $6 for a drink versus $10,000 for drinking and driving. The $10,000 includes your attorney's fees, fine, insurance payments, court and treatment costs, and more.

Designated drivers can be free or you can pay for an inexpensive cab ride.
