Committee to review info from 99th Terrace study
July 23, 2010
Overland Park, KS - Nearly a year after a tragic pedestrian and vehicle accident, results of a comprehensive review will be presented to a City Council committee Wednesday night.
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, in Conference Room One of City Hall, 8500 Santa Fe Drive, the Public Works Committee of the City Council will hear a report from the Public Works Department regarding findings from traffic studies of 99th Terrace, where a pedestrian was killed last year.
An extensive analysis of traffic speeds along 99th Terrace prior to and following the July 2009 fatality accident of Sandra Carocari was done, as well as numerous traffic enforcement efforts by police officers. Carocari was killed when a driver left the roadway and went into her front yard.
Subsequent evaluations of the accident by a police traffic unit and traffic engineers show that speed is not a factor.
Residents along and near 99th Terrace, west of Antioch, urged city officials in August, 2009, to enforce traffic speeds and look at traffic calming.
Starting in mid-August, the police traffic unit issued in excess of 200 tickets over a few weeks for speeding, most going less than 10 miles over the speed limit, one for going 15 miles over the speed limit, as well as seatbelt violations, driving under the influence and no proof of insurance. A majority of the drivers on 99th Terrace were not speeding.
Most of those receiving tickets lived either on 99th Terrace or within a half mile and west of Antioch.
Staff evaluated 99th Terrace for possible traffic calming measures based on results of the studies and concluded that it was not supported by data.
Police and public works staff members will continue to monitor traffic along 99th Terrace.
