Mayor Carl Gerlach was elected by his peers this week to serve as president of the League of Kansas Municipalities.
Gerlach was elected during the organization's annual conference Oct. 3-6 in Topeka. He succeeds Jack Rowlett, a city councilmember from Paola.
"During these tough economic times, cities need to work together closely to solve common problems," Gerlach said. "I look forward to working with the League and cities across the state to unify our voice."
As president, Gerlach will serve a one-year term. He will be assisted by Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer, who was elected vice president.
The League unifies, strengthens and advocates for the interest of Kansas municipalities while promoting the quality of life for people who live in more than 600 Kansas cities.
