Remember when gas was less than 30 cents a gallon, a first class U.S. postage stamp was 4 cents and Overland Park was not a city?

Do you remember Overland Park before Metcalf South and Oak Park shopping malls existed? Do you remember when College Boulevard did not exist, nor Corporate Woods?

A committee of residents is working to bring Overland Park’s accomplishments and history to you during 2010 as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the city. Currently, the 50th Anniversary Committee is formulating ideas and discussing possible events.

Overland Park was incorporated on May 20, 1960.

In 1960, Overland Park’s southernmost boundary was 107th Street, there were slightly more than 28,000 residents, and the primary shopping destination was downtown Overland Park.

Today, Overland Park is the second most populous city in Kansas with an estimated population of 173,719, and its southernmost boundary is 203rd Street.

Committee members are Mary Birch and Liz Hochscheid, co-chairs; Becky Ansley, Ben Craig, Carol Martin Tracy, Denise Riedel, Florent Wagner, Jerry Cook, Karla Rocker, Kristin Stoneman, Mark Ferguson, Marv Lindmark, Maureen Gallagher, Myron Scafe, Reba Williams, Robin Fish, Steve Ruse, Tracey Osborne, Tracey Roberts and Sean Reilly.
