For many people, it is a milestone in life. For the city of Overland Park, it is no different.

On Thursday, May 20, Overland Park will officially turn 50. Overland Park was incorporated as a first-class city on May 20, 1960.

Back in 1960, the average court fine for a traffic violation cost about $5, and driving under the influence cost about $100. Revenue in 1960 from the court came to $4,500. There were about 500 cases in 1960.

Today, 4,100 cases are handled each month. The average fine for a traffic violation is $120; a DUI will cost in excess of $1,000. Court revenue is approaching $6 million per year.

In 1960, Overland Park had 19 sworn police officers. Today, we have 254 sworn officers.

On Thursday, May 20, the Overland Park Convention & Visitors Bureau, along with the 50th Anniversary Committee, is sponsoring a luncheon celebration at the New Theatre Restaurant, 9229 Foster. Contact the CVB at 913/491-0123 to make your lunch reservation. Tickets are $35.

There will be activities throughout 2010 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, including a historic Overland Park trolley tour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22.

The Overland Park Historical Society is organizing the event. The tour leaves from the Overland Park Presbyterian Church, 8029 Overland Park Drive, every 20 minutes.
