Mill and Overlay Program

913-895-6012

During the mill and overlay program, the top two to three inches of the street are milled off and replaced with new asphalt.

Milling removes the old surface and creates a rough surface which allows the new asphalt to bond with the old pavement.

Microsurfacing enables the city to extend the time until a mill and overlay is needed, but it does not eliminate the need entirely.

On average, the city mills and overlays a thoroughfare every 10 to 15 years and a residential street every 28 to 30 years.

2010 projects:

  • Mission Road: 95th to 103rd Street
  • 103rd Street: US -69 to Quivira Road
  • College Blvd.: Benson to Switzer Road
  • Barkley St.: 71st north to Cul-de-sac
  • 81st Ter. Cul-de-sac: east of Mastin
  • Metcalf Ave.: Shawnee Mission Pkwy. To 75th St. & 86th St. to 99th St.

During mill and overlay, streets are closed for two to four hours, depending on air temperature.

Crews usually complete the work between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., reducing traffic to one lane each way, at times. Access to businesses is maintained, and advance notification is given.
