Microsurfacing and Cape Seal Program

Workers Surfacing a RoadEvery year, Overland Park applies a preventative maintenance treatment called "microsurfacing" to designated streets throughout the city.

Microsurface prevents water from seeping into the pavement and protects the pavement from exposure to the sun, which rapidly can deteriorate the asphalt. In many cases, the sealant will eliminate the need to do expensive pavement repairs and will add years to the life of the existing pavement.

Generally, the microsurfacing program starts in March or April and ends by early October since it cannot be installed when ambient air temperatures drop below 55 degrees.

The microsurfacing process will require the contractor, Ballou Construction, to close some streets completely while others will be closed one lane at a time. Closures will last approximately four to six hours until the microsurface has sufficiently cured enough to allow traffic.

2011 Program

Residents may use the interactive map  to follow the progress of the 2011 microsurfacing program. The map is color-coded to help determine scheduled and completed work.

  • Green = completed
  • Red = imminent and should be completed within the next 7 days
  • Orange = streets that are scheduled to be treated

For scheduling, parking or other questions, call Ballou's customer service hotline at 913-319-9266.

To report a problem, submit a help request through Overland Park Cares, the city's customer service system, with a description of the problem, location and any other pertinent information.
