How do I know if my house is in the “Special Flood Hazard Area” (i.e. the official FEMA 100-year floodplain)?

Letters were mailed in the spring 2009 to all homes that are on or near the new floodplains. The only exception was for homes along Tomahawk Creek and its tributaries (those maps were revised in 2002 and haven't changed).

The letter provided our best available assessment of your status. The city does not provide official status determinations, and any information we may have provided is always subject to correction.

For a number of homes that appeared close to the floodplain, FEMA was able to use detailed survey data supplied by the city and Johnson County to verify they are "out" of the floodplain. This verification is contained in various Letters of Map Change and applies to residential property only. Non-residential properties are discussed in subsequent questions.

Other properties had been listed in older letters. FEMA reviewed all of these older documents and determined which could be revalidated and which were revoked.

If you do not have a notification letter from 2009 and cannot locate your address online, please can contact the Engineer of the Day.
