How do I get flood insurance?
Flood insurance is provided by the National Flood Insurance Program, a federal agency. It is sold by most insurance companies. Your local agent can help you get coverage. Ask specifically about flood insurance - nearly all standard home owner policies exclude flood damage.
Some things to note:
- If you are in the "Special Flood Hazard Area" and your home was built before Sept. 30, 1977, when Overland Park's first floodplain maps were adopted, you are eligible for insurance at the "Pre-FIRM" rate. You should not need detailed elevation information on your home to get a quote.
- If you are in this "Pre-FIRM" category and have also maintained an active flood insurance policy from before this latest map change, you may be eligible for even lower rates under the "grandfather rule."
- If your home was built after Sept. 30, 1977, it is considered a "Post-FIRM" structure. Post-FIRM structure that now are located in the "Special Flood Hazard Area" due to a map change also may be eligible for special treatment under "grandfather rule." You would need to verify the house was built in compliance with the map in effect at that time and that it hasn't been altered in any way that makes it less flood-worthy. Some other requirements must be met. Please contact us as we likely have data on file that can assist you.
