Public Safety Positions Disability Benefits

Disability coverage is provided for an illness or injury and becomes effective on the first day of the month following your date of hire. There's a 90-day waiting period before benefits are payable or a 180-day waiting period if the disability is covered by the city's Worker's Compensation Plan.

You will receive 60 percent of your monthly base salary and benefits may continue up to age 65 provided that you remain totally and permanently disabled.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance: offered to employees to provide coverage until the employee becomes covered by one of the city's disability plans (i.e., Police Pension Plan, KPERS, or city's Salary Continuance Plan). During the first 90 days off due to disability, the employee will receive 60% of his/her base monthly salary, should he/she become sick or injured (including maternity leave) and not able to work. Waiting periods are applicable before benefit payments begin. Benefits begin for new hires (excluding police officers) after a 30-day waiting period and are payable for up to one year. Employees must exhaust all accrued sick leave before being eligible for benefit payments under each plan.
