Fire Department

Overland Park is a premier department with progressive philosophies on safety and education.

The Commission on Fire Accreditation International in 2013 recognized the Overland Park Fire Department as one of 199 departments in the nation to receive full accreditation.

OPFD has been providing fire protection and safety services to Overland Park for more than 90 years. We operate professionally, responsibly and with accountability from five fire stations throughout the city.

The city partners with Johnson County Medical Action (Med-Act) on advanced life saving emergency medical squad house

Squad house

Located near 104th and Reeds Road, east of Lamar Avenue, the Fire Department has placed an SUV with medical equipment, a paramedic and an EMT in the squad house for rapid response to the increasing medical call load occurring in the response area.

Fire officials met with neighbors before completing purchase of the home to explain how it will operate.

Partnership has benefits

It’s a partnership that brings efficiency and savings for two city fire departments.

The Overland Park Fire Department is provides firefighting, fire investigation, training and code enforcement services for Merriam. In return, crews from the Merriam fire station are responding to calls in the northern part of Overland Park, north of Johnson Drive. But it won’t be Merriam crews responding.

That’s because in the arrangement, Merriam's 21 fire department employees are part of Overland Park Fire. The city of Merriam retains ownership of the fire station and apparatus.

The partnership saves each city money. Merriam officials estimate it may save half a million dollars over 10 years. Overland Park fire officials estimate the city will save $120,000 per year in contract costs.

This creative partnership has already added Advanced Life Support First Response to northern Overland Park and Merriam, improving service and saving money.
