Citizens Police Academy
Get an up close and personal look at police work...
The belief behind our Citizens Police Academy is E.P.I.C., Encouraging a Positive and Interactive Community.
The goal of the Academy is to create educated citizens on basic information regarding the police profession. These citizens can then return to their neighborhoods better informed to improve the relationship between the community and the police department.
About the Academy
In this eight-week (28-hours) academy, participants learn about patrol operations, firearms training and weapons systems, crime analysis, narcotics, traffic enforcement and more. Participants will see through the eyes of the instructors, and "hands on" practicals, into what it's like to be an Overland Park Police Officer. There also will be opportunities to observe and interact with tactical police equipment and vehicles through demonstrations by the police K-9 unit and SWAT team.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have no criminal record. Criminal history background checks will be conducted on all applicants. Persons selected to attend the Academy are expected to participate in seven (7) out of eight (8) sessions. If this is not possible, please do not apply due to limited class size.
NOTE: This Academy is not designed for Police Officer candidates. It is an overview of the police department for the purpose of community members.
