Family Survival Kit (Drugs & Alcohol)

What is the Family Survival Kit?

The Family Survival Kit (FSK) is a city-sponsored information packet that is sent to the parents of middle and high school students in Overland Park warning them of the dangers related to alcohol and/or drug abuse. It is the common belief of Overland Park that the key to alcohol and/or drug prevention is providing information that will hopefully prevent illicit drug use, keep drugs out of neighborhoods and schools, and provide a safe and secure environment for all people.

The Family Survival Kit's mission is to provide awareness of the many dangers associated with alcohol and/or drug use among our youth and respond by providing information that:

  • Provides factual data about alcohol and/or drug use among Johnson County youth.
  • Encourages parents to talk to their youth about the dangers related to substance abuse.
  • Empowers students to make responsible and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Communicates realities, misperceptions and secondary effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse.
  • Delivers educational services and model programs to schools, communities, and organizations.
  • Increases personal and community awareness of high-risk factors associated with chemical use, misuse, and abuse.
  • Provides resources and empowerment strategies, which foster and support personal growth, interpersonal relationships, and resiliency.

Our youth must be made aware of the risks of drug use-at home, in school, in sports leagues, in faith communities, in places of work, and in other settings and activities. This is essential because an individual who reaches the age of 21 without smoking, using drugs, or abusing alcohol is virtually certain never to do so; surely this is a worthwhile pursuit.
